PLAY THERAPY FOR CHILDREN IN HUNTINGTON NY

SERVICES

Book Free Consultation

No two families are the same so I tailor my therapy to meet the specific needs of my clients. Whether your young child is struggling with anxiety, behavioral problems, relationship issues, school adjustment, or any other early childhood challenge, we will work together to find the right solution.

All therapy with children involves the caregivers and I will support you in making the most of your relationship with your child.

Below are just two of the approaches that I use with families with young children. Reach out for a free consultation about the types of services that your child needs.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

A woman with short gray hair and glasses is playing with a baby girl holding colorful toys. The baby girl is wearing a burgundy dress and a floral headband, sitting on the woman's lap. The scene takes place in a cozy room with a dark sofa and green wall in the background.

PCIT is an evidence-based treatment for children ages 3-7 with behavioral and emotional challenges. Treatment involves at least one parent or caregiver and the child.

In the first phase of PCIT, I teach and coach the parent in strategies for increasing warmth and connection in the relationship with the child.

In phase 2, parents learn how to most effectively manage their child's challenging behaviors in a calm and confident manner.

Sessions are held weekly either in-person in my office or by telehealth (Zoom). The full treatment lasts 12-20 weeks.

Play therapy makes a difference. Play is an enjoyable, fun activity that elevates our spirits and brightens our outlook on life. Play relieves feelings of stress and boredom and, most importantly, helps us express ourselves. Play therapy refers to a large number of treatment methods, all applying the therapeutic benefits of play. Play therapy helps children to address and resolve their own problems and builds on the natural way that children learn about themselves and their relationships in the world around them. The practice of play therapy requires extensive, specialized education, training and experience.

Parent-Child Relationship-based Therapy

Parent–child relationship-based therapy in early childhood places the focus not only on the child’s behavior, but on the powerful bond between caregiver and child. This approach draws on the science of attachment, recognizing that warmth, safety, and emotional attunement form the foundation for healthy development. In therapy, we work together to strengthen that bond by creating more frequent positive interactions—moments of play, joy, and shared connection that help children feel secure and understood. Over time, these positive experiences shift patterns in the relationship, making challenging behaviors easier to manage and deepening the sense of trust and closeness between parent and child.

Consultation and Reflective Supervision

Many therapists want to work with toddlers and preschoolers but feel unsure how to adapt their training to early childhood and parent-child work.

I offer individualized consultation for clinicians who want to “age-down” their practice and confidently treat children ages 0–5 using a relationship-based early childhood mental health approach.

What Consultation Covers

Consultation focuses on the practical and developmental shifts needed to work effectively with young children and their caregivers, including:

  • Adapting therapy skills for toddlers and preschoolers

  • Understanding behavior as communication

  • Structuring sessions that include play and parents

  • Selecting developmentally appropriate materials

  • Working from a parent-child relationship lens

  • Supporting caregivers with co-regulation and special time

  • Navigating common early childhood challenges

Case consultation, treatment planning, session structure, and documentation considerations can be included as needed.

Why Early Childhood Mental Health?

Early childhood mental health is a high-demand field with a shortage of qualified providers. Expanding your practice to include young children allows you to meet a critical community need while developing a meaningful clinical niche.

NYS-AIMH Endorsement Support

Consultation can also support clinicians interested in NYS-AIMH endorsement, including understanding endorsement categories and the role of reflective supervision/consultation.

Reflective Supervision Available

Reflective supervision is a collaborative, relationship-based process that supports clinical growth by exploring the emotional and relational aspects of the work. It strengthens insight, supports ethical practice, and helps reduce burnout.

Fees

  • $200 per 60-minute consultation

  • Sliding scale available for clinicians with 5 or fewer years in private practice
